What I’ve Learned!

Posted on December 16th, 2010 in Uncategorized by toriturtles3

Journalism, how do I even describe it? It’s my passion. I love to write, anything and everything. This year has been different. I really wasn’t prepared for it. The workload, the preparation needed to get stuff done, and all the tech problems! WOW! It’s been a busy semester.

The workload! That’s a loaded question. Well I have learned the workload isn’t that bad when you prepare yourself for it and make time. I think the problem I have is making time. It could get done faster but I have other things I need to get done also and to me this should be one of the most important. I’m majoring in it. So I should be like ‘um work can wait!’ but I have been putting things off. That’s not like me. The work load I put on myself will be easier next semester because I now know how to schedule my time wisely and work efficiently.

Technical problems have been in a pain in the rear. I swear they drive me up the wall. Movie Maker doesn’t always like to work and we have to convert all the videos before we transfer anything. It’s so time consuming. Sometimes I just wish things would work like there supposed to. I am still learning to be patient with these difficulties. I guess it just takes time.

The preparation is not that bad if you think about it. Well sometimes it is. You have to think of a topic and then find people to interview, and you have to get some good video footage and maybe a few still images.  That on the other hand takes time! The school gets noisy during passing period, lunch, before and after school, and even during class time. The hard part is scheduling a good time for you and the person you are interviewing. If they can get out of class do it, if not find another reasonable time that would work for the both of you. Interview questions are at times difficult to come up with. That’s when I turn to the lovely internet. I read other peoples blogs that are semi-close to what I am doing then I go and write down question ideas. I usually don’t ask all the questions just because I use follow ups. Follow up are questions that describe why, when, where, how, and who. I have also learned that it is best that you take side notes. And most importantly you stay focused!

Julia Gaspar Do Ruasmento is another sixteen year old foreign exchange student from Brazil. She is attending Fort Morgan High School as a junior this year. She is living with Mike and Diana Webb, and is also sharing this family with Darel Madison Yadzi. This is the very first time Julia has been to the U.S. She says she likes it here. She enjoys learning new things, such as our cultures and like meeting new people. Julia’s favorite class is photography and she strongly dislikes algebra.  In Brazil school is harder because you get taught alot more and here it’s easier for her. Julia takes a Portuguese class in Brazil just like we take English class here.  Julia’s favorite food in America is pizza, and her favorite in Brazil is rice, steak, and french fries. She does not play any sports. She also hangs out with her friends alot. Since she’s been here she has gotten close to Keeley Brown. She says her town is ten times bigger but there is nothing for her to do there. Julia really misses her family and home. She gets to talk to her family often but not everyday.

In with the New!

As everyone should know graduation is racing around the corner for seniors here at FMHS and for 8th graders at FMMS. Here is the question: Is it time for this sweet goodbye and this welcoming hello?

Yes, the time has finally come to enjoy a new beginning in a new school. As teachers and parents would hope for their graduates is to further their education. Labrea Moon a student at FMMS states, “I am excited for the classes here at FMHS, such as the Art classes!” But then again she says, “I am scared because of all the drama and everyone is way taller than me.” She says with a giggle. Well high school isn’t that bad Labrea, just stay focused and you’ll be okay.
“I was excited, because you get more opportunities to be free and you don’t have to act like kids.” Explains Kennidi Cobbley

Danny Mosqueda tells me “I was nervous because I thought it was a big school and wasn’t sure if I could find my classes!”

Peace Before Death!

During the last week before spring break Mr. Jeremy Kaiser had all his sophomore English class write a story in 55 words. It was called 55 fiction. I asked him how he felt about this project and he stated enthusiastically, “55 fiction rocks!”
So while we’re on the subject here is the 55 fiction I wrote.

 Peace Before Death
Zap! A sudden flash became a haven protecting the world from this masquerade. Women wheep in utter bliss, because of the abrupt tranquility of the world. As the skies darken like a roaring forest fire. Men yelled “The world is going to perish!” Without warning a man appears and whispers “The day has finally come.”

Art Shows #1

Blind Contour of Amy Rodriguez.

Blind Contour of Amy Rodriguez.

Michelle Chubbuck, sophomore created classmate Amy Rodriguez as a blind contour. It was made August 26th, 2009 in beginning art taught by Mr. Jensen. All that was used was a pencil and a skcetch book. Michelle commented “It is the best drawing I have ever made!” She was asked if she would change anything about it and her response was “No.” For those who don’t  know what a blind contour exactly is, a blind contour is a method of drawing that can be used for an effective training aid and discipline.

Graffiti is Art

Posted on October 9th, 2009 in Uncategorized by toriturtles3

Art tells so much about people, their emotions, and most of all who they are. There are many forms of art, such as music, drawing, writing and ceramics. Our school’s current arts teachers are Mr. Jensen, Mrs. Stream, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Howe and Mr. Brito. I believe they are doing a great job on teaching and showing us students to succeed in what we are striving for, but art isn’t just what you express inside a class room. It can be looked at in many different ways.

Inside school art electives are beginning art, Ceramics, Paint, Photography, Orchestra, Band, Choir, and Jazz band. Meanwhile, when students aren’t attending these classes they are expressing themselves in different ways.

Graffiti is a form of art. In my point of view it is very creative and time consuming. The school doesn’t allow it because it would be considered gang related. It would be interesting if there could be some shown in the school. Like on the restroom doors, stair doors and in the commons. I do not think the school would allow this action to take place because of vulgar language and the students who may be involved in gangs. Jason Mueller 10th grade stated. “Some forms of graffiti should be seen inside the school, if it is appropriate and has nothing gang related to it.”

The students of FMHS are very creative and that should be shared between our staff and peers. So I asked a few of my classmates if they would be willing to give me graffiti art work that have made. They all said they were willing to give it a try because of the stereo types people are given if they can create such art and where they come from.

Individuality

Posted on September 14th, 2009 in Uncategorized by toriturtles3

People are so different in every way. As you know no one is alike. We are individuals that should be heard through a strong passion.

Our students are being discriminated for who the are everyday. I strongly believe it’s not right, because our teachers and parents tell us to be different and be unique. I have heard this several times in my past.

Individuality is important in life. It expresses feeling, passion, expression, and so much more. The social groups people are are placing others into is completely wrong. It shouldn’t matter who your friends are, how you dress, or how you look in general. Everyone is different and it should always stay that way. So be yourself and don’t be afraid to be an individual.
